What is terrazzo?

Terrazzo is described as a composite material and cast or prefabricated prefabricated terrazzo is used for floors, plinths, walls, stair treads, countertops, and other custom products. Terrazzo consists of fragments of marble, granite, quartz, glass, shells or other suitable materials. It uses cement or epoxy resin matrix as a binder. The metal strip divides parts, performs color transitions, designs decorative patterns or signs, and allows movement or reduction of cracks. The divider is made of aluminum (epoxy terrazzo only), zinc, brass or plastic, but it is never stainless steel.

The history of terrazzo

Terrazzo has an interesting history, with roots all over the world. Dating back to Italy over 500 years ago, marble was the primary material of choice. Workers in Venice will use the waste marble shards they save from high-end projects and place them next to each other in a clay mortar base as their homes and terraces.

Terrazzo is also related to the technique seminato (meaning seed). For this technique, workers throw large pieces of marble into wet cement, which are then ground and polished. Together, these two methods create a universal form of terrazzo, which includes stones bonded to a bed of cement.

Although the Italians are traditionally trusted because it is generally believed that the terrazzo was invented by the Venetians, archaeologists have found evidence of such floors dating back 10,000 years in Turkish ruins. Nowadays, and most installations are based on epoxy resin. Epoxy resins were introduced in the 1970s and soon provided advantages over cement systems, including faster installation speeds, greater design flexibility, and longer life cycles.

Types of terrazzo tile

Thin-set terrazzo system

The thin terrazzo system includes epoxy or polyacrylate as a matrix. Polyacrylate is a cement-modified acrylate, which has higher compressive strength and higher impact resistance than cement. Polyacrylate also allows steam transmission.

The installation method is the same as that of a conventional monolithic terrazzo, but the thickness is at least 3/8 inch. The epoxy resin matrix is a two-component resin that directly adheres to the concrete slab. A moisture barrier system and/or crack suppression film may be required. For all slabs for slope applications, a vapor barrier is required under the slab. Today, epoxy terrazzo is the most commonly used system in commercial construction.

The advantages of this material over cement terrazzo include almost endless color options. Exotic aggregates such as mirrors, mother-of-pearl and plastic aggregates can also be used in epoxy terrazzo systems. The installation thickness of the system is 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch. Other advantages include lighter weight, higher strength (PSI rate 10,000+), faster installation speed, impermeable surface and less cracking. One disadvantage of epoxy terrazzo is that it is only used for internal rather than external applications. In addition, the terrazzo surface layer is not breathable, so moisture-proof products may be required. If the old building does not have an active moisture barrier under the ground slab, epoxy terrazzo should not be installed.

Cementitious terrazzo system

The cement system consists of a monolithic terrazzo in which a ½ inch terrazzo surface is directly bonded to a new or existing concrete slab. Then pour the panel into the directly bonded metal L-angle divider.

It is also called washed terrazzo, usually an exterior application with a non-slip textured finish. Instead of grinding and polishing, before curing the exposed marble, granite and/or quartz aggregate, the finish is achieved by gently washing off some cement. The village system can be installed in monolithic or bonded mud bed applications.

Will terrazzo be out of date?

Terrazzo will not be out of date. As a way of reusing discarded rocks, this material is also sustainable. We believe that terrazzo tiles are a unique surface choice, warmer than marble and more interesting than ordinary tiles. Inevitably, terrazzo has become the most popular choice of tiles for bathroom and kitchen floors. Compared with other tiles, rustic terrazzo tiles do not have many color options, but they will make you home more stylish and restrained.
