How Are Ceramic Tiles Made?

Ceramic tiles of various colors and patterns have become the main decoration materials in modern families, and their use will directly affect the appearance of each family's interior decoration. With the improvement of manufacturing technology, the scope of use of ceramic tiles is becoming wider and wider. But do you know how ceramic tiles are made?

The production process of ceramic tiles

The raw materials of ceramic tiles are plastic raw materials, such as black mud or white mud, which are the basis of ceramic tiles; Ridge raw materials such as quartz, which determine the various properties of ceramic tiles; Solvent raw materials, such as feldspar, determine the toughness of ceramic tiles. These raw materials are from the soil. Before mining, the composition needs to be tested, and then various raw materials are proportioned.

Various ingredients are not very uniform. They will enter the ball mill through the conveyor belt. The ball mill is equipped with wear-resistant pebbles. Water and various additives will be added to the ball mill. After several hours of ball milling, the raw materials will become fine powder with a diameter of 0.1 - 0.3 mm and finally become slurry.

The iron in the mud shall also be removed. All iron impurities shall be taken out with a powerful magnet with a magnetic force of 9000 Gauss. The mud shall pass through the screening system to separate the impurities from the raw materials with large diameter particles.

The mud enters the drying tower for drying and dehydration. The mud is sprayed into a fog by pressure, dried and dehydrated by hot air, and then becomes particles with good fluidity.

The dried powder is sent to the hopper of the press by the conveyor belt and pressed into the embryo body meeting the density requirements by the brick press. The whole process is controlled by the computer.

When we buy ceramic tiles, the salesperson will use scissors to scrape on the tiles, spray water on the tiles and sprinkle soy sauce on the tiles to test the performance of the tiles.

Is this test method credible?

The surface hardness of ceramic tile is tested by the Mohs hardness method, which has ten grades. The hardness of scissors is generally below grade 4. Interestingly, the national standard GB / T 4100-2015 does not specify the hardness of ceramic tiles.

The anti-skid professional test is to apply special lubricating oil on the ceramic tile, tilt the ceramic tile slowly, and people slip at that tilt angle. At this time, the tilt angle is the anti-skid degree of the ceramic tile.

The professional test method for the pollution resistance of ceramic tiles is to drop chromium, chlorine, iodine, and olive oil on the brick surface, place it for 24 hours and get the anti-pollution level through different cleaning procedures.

Therefore, there is still a certain gap between the small test of ceramic tile demonstration and the scientific test.

In terms of ceramic tile inspection, there are dozens of tests, such as dimensional error, friction coefficient, wet expansion, glaze crack resistance, frost resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, dissolution of lead and cadmium, color difference, water absorption, apparent porosity, apparent relative density and bulk density, fracture modulus and failure strength, impact resistance, wear resistance, linear thermal expansion, thermal shock, etc. These testing items have national standards.
